While the Sundance Film Festival crowd was wondering last Saturday about which films to see and which gifting suites had the best swag, the actor Adrian Grenier had gathered about 100 friends for a candlelit dinner at a private home in Deer Valley, Utah. The occasion was not the coming “Entourage” movie in which he stars, but a passion project about a whale.

Or, to be more precise, a documentary that he hopes to have ready by 2017 about what’s been called “the loneliest whale on the planet,” a creature off the California coast that emits a frequency that no other whale can hear.

“He’s been calling out his whole life, and he’s never received a response,” Mr. Grenier said.

His partner in producing the documentary is the filmmaker Josh Zeman. But financing fell through last year, so in addition to a Kickstarter campaign for $300,000 next month, he wanted to spread the word at Sundance.

The sprawling hilltop house, rented by a public relations firm, was filled with musicians, artists and writers from New York and Los Angeles, some of whom swapped their snow boots for stilettos.

With Sundance thronged these days with onlookers and crashers, party planners seek to create exclusivity with private dinners away from the hubbub. “Main Street tends to be a lot more noise,” said Mr. Grenier, who wore a gray Calvin Klein shirt and skinny tie. “We wanted people to have that intimacy, get off the beaten path.”

Tequila flowed and Hotel Chantelle, a Lower East Side restaurant and nightclub, served an Instagram-worthy spread of chicken nuggets and waffles topped with maple syrup cotton candy. (“No seafood, of course,” said the chef, Seth Levine.)

By 11 p.m., as the party was in full swing, with several people dancing in the great room, Mr. Grenier stood in front of the fireplace and told everyone to head into town for the after-party. Revelers climbed into a fleet of SUVs and took over the Stella Artois lounge before heading downstairs to Tao, which opened a pop-up club on Main Street.

Though the club occupies a garage near the ski lift, it felt more like Las Vegas, with thumping E.D.M. and hip-hop, multicolor lights and a stream of celebrities that included Chris Pine, Margot Robbie and Kid Cudi.

Mr. Grenier danced, stopping occasionally to pose for photos with fans and friends. “My work is done,” he said, grinning.
