A European summer

After 20 years of working in the fashion industry, handling merchandising and sales for her husband Rajesh Pratap Singh’s label for over a decade, designer Payal Pratap decided to satisfy her own creative urge. “I’m extremely glad that I chose my own journey, otherwise 10 years down the line, I would’ve regretted not taking this decision,” says the NIFT Delhi graduate. Her latest collection, ‘Banks of the Danube’ will be on display in the city this week.

It has been inspired by her time spent working in exports for about six years in Eastern Europe.

Named after the river which flows through Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine, the collection gives a contemporary look suited for an urban lifestyle.

“The fabrics used range from natural to net cut-work jacquards, incorporating ancient woven European motifs. Adding to this, I have also used yoke necks, geometric patterns, architectural ornament, decorative arts, cross stitch and folkloric prints,” she says, adding that this gives her customers varied choice.

The ethos of the label lies in texturing, patchwork and using complex embroidery detailing. The colour palette includes shades of floral white, cyan blue, deep sea coral to carnation pink, wild berry and mint green. Ask her about the pieces she likes the most, and she replies, “A nice indigo summer dress and a yoke neck in white are two of my favourite garments influenced by European culture.”

With previous collections, Payal has always opted for versatility in her creations, and this one is no different.

And so you can choose to mix and match between layered skirts, corseted bodices, dhoti pants and empire waistlines, apart from cropped jackets and kurta dresses.

She also uses stylised accessories to pull together her looks, and says, “I like to keep it simple, and I’m hoping that I can concentrate on bringing out more in this category.” For this collection, she has used multicoloured stone-carved jewellery, malleable leather belts, kolhapuri stilettos and bags, which are garnering a lot of interest by themselves.

Her passion for style was evident from a young age. “I was very fond of dressing up and putting clothes together for my mom. She was my earliest model. Later, I became the styling authority for my family before we left for any occasion,” says the youthful designer, whose personal style is all about comfort and the confidence that comes with it.

On her husband, Payal says, “I’m fortunate that both of us are designers and have our own identity in constructively critiquing each other; it benefits us profoundly.”

Banish pimples with these 6 home remedies from your kitchen

We often spot a pimple on our face when there is an important event to attend such as a party or someone’s wedding. Popping them isn’t the best thing to do but you can certainly manage pimples in a better way by using these six herbal remedies.

Lemon juice

Lemons contain vitamin C and phytonutrients called flavonoids that have a strong antioxidant as well as antibiotic action. Free radicals generated during the metabolic reactions within the body can damage the healthy cells of the body, causing inflammation and swelling. The antioxidants in lemon restrict the action of these free radicals and this makes lemon juice an excellent remedy for pimples. A word of caution regarding lemon juice – it can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and therefore, do not venture out in the sun when you have applied it on your face.

Steps:

Squeeze out the juice from a freshly-cut lemon and dab a little directly on to the pimple.

pimple home remedies

vintage prom dresses

Leave it on overnight and wash the next morning.

Mix a tablespoon of groundnut oil into an equal quantity of freshly squeezed lemon juice and apply over the entire face.

This provides long-term preventive action against blackheads that may later turn into pimples.

Garlic

Garlic is one the wonder foods of India that has remarkable medicinal properties ranging from digestive and antibiotic action to fighting against high cholesterol levels. Garlic is also said to have the action of cleansing toxins from the blood, resulting in blemish-free, glowing skin free from pimples.

Steps:

Remove the outer skin of garlic and rub a single clove on the spot where the pimple has sprouted to see immediate results.

Grind a few cloves of garlic, mix with a little curd and use this face pack on the area where you see the pimples.

Tomato pulp

Tomatoes are acidic in nature and applying their pulp to the pimple causes the skin to dry and the pores of the skin in the region get tightened. This means there is a lesser chance of sebum leaking from the pores to cause pimples. Tomato is also rich in antioxidants and applying the pulp to the face reduces inflammation and damage of the skin.

Steps:

Cut a tomato in half, squeeze out a little of the pulp or the juice and apply on the pimple.

If this causes you pain or drying of the skin, dilute the tomato pulp with a little water and use.

Do not do this more than once or twice a day because it may lead to excessive drying of the skin which can be quite painful.

Cinnamon and honey pack

Cinnamon or dalchini is a common spice used for adding a distinct aroma and flavour to food but the essential oil it contains also has strong anti-microbial properties. Honey does not contain a lot of moisture which can promote the growth of microorganisms. Considering that pimples often arise from an infection within the pores of the skin, combining cinnamon with honey is an effective remedy.

Steps:

Mix a little cinnamon powder with a little honey to make a paste; avoid adding water because it will destroy the action of honey.

Dab a little of the paste on each pimple and allow to remain overnight.

Wash off with lukewarm water the next morning.

Repeat for a few days if necessary.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek or methi has multiple benefits – not only is it helpful in keeping blood glucose levels low in diabetics, it also helps remove blackheads and prevent pimples from erupting. For skin application, it is best to use the leaves of the methi plant rather than the seeds.

Steps:

Grind a few leaves of methi with a little water to make a smooth paste.

At night, apply this paste to the area of the face that shows evidence of blackheads and wash off with warm water the next morning.

Dry a few neem leaves in the sun and grind to a fine powder. Mix equal quantities of this powder, turmeric powder and a little rose water to form a paste.

Apply this to the pimples, leave it on for around 20 minutes or so and then wash your face

Turmeric

Remember how your grandmother always insisted on sprinkling a little turmeric on your wounds saying it would help it heal? Well, medical researchers are now finding that turmeric contains ingredients that make it a powerful antimicrobial. No wonder then that women in India have always been using turmeric paste claiming it keeps their skin healthy and glowing. Although you can apply turmeric paste directly to skin, consuming it with a little warm milk is also said to be an effective remedy for flawless skin.

Steps:

Mix a little turmeric powder with a little coconut oil and apply directly onto the pimples at night.

Next morning, wash your face with water to remove the paste.

Whatever you do, do not pop pimples as that will leave a scar behind which is even difficult to get rid of. If your acne problem persists despite using these remedies for a few weeks, see a skin specialist.

Does fermented drink kombucha actually have health benefits?

It's murky brown, laced with fermented mushroom and tastes like slightly sweet, effervescent vinegar, but that hasn't stopped kombucha becoming the latest drink of choice for health-conscious Hongkongers.

Kombucha (pronounced kom-boo-cha) is produced by combining sweetened tea with "Scoby" - symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast - which looks like a flat beige mushroom, and leaving it in the back of a cupboard for a week or two. It has been quietly consumed for centuries in Russia and China, but only recently has its popularity soared.

While it might not sound great, it tastes better you think, particularly when brewed with flavour combinations like lemon grass and ginger or pomegranate and passion fruit.

Plus, it's all in the name of good health - or at least that's the belief. Kombucha devotees make many miraculous claims about the elixir, from preventing cancer, stimulating the immune system, improving digestion and liver function as well as bringing about hormonal balance.

There's only one problem: there is no medical evidence supporting these claims. So far, studies on kombucha consumption have been on rats, not humans.

http://www.kissydress.co.uk/blue-bridesmaid-dresses

A study published in Food Chemical Toxicology looked at the effect of consuming kombucha on rats that had been induced into diabetes by a contaminant called alloxan. In the study, it was found that kombucha consumption effectively restored the alloxan-induced changes in the body. While black tea had the same effect, kombucha was found to be "more efficient".

In an earlier study, published in Food & Function in 2010, researchers fed kombucha to mice with stomach ulcers. They found that black tea fermented for four days with a kombucha culture was as effective in treating the ulcers as the control medication, omeprazole. (Again, researchers also found regular black tea was effective, although, once again, not as effective as kombucha.)

Other studies on kombucha-drinking rats have found improvements from a bolstered immune system, improved liver and kidney function as well as repair to damage caused by environmental pollutants.

"What you can't infer from [studies on rats] is that kombucha is good for this disorder or this condition, but what you can say is there are certain compounds in kombucha that have certain benefits - but it's quite an extrapolated inference," says Brian Leung, a board licensed naturopathic doctor, chiropractor and kinesiologist at the Integrated Medicine Institute in Central.

Leung hails from the United States, where the fermented drink has enjoyed popularity over the past 10 years, and considers himself a kombucha drinker. He believes in its health benefits, but is under no illusions.

"A lot of the health benefits you see from drinking kombucha are related to the presence of green tea and black tea - for which the benefits are already well known."

"The bacteria in the yeast also has a synergistic effect with the compounds in the tea, known to create saccharic acid - a compound of sugars with acid - which has been shown to be anti-cancer as well as high in anti-oxidants, which protects your liver. The fermentation process of black tea will also improve the antioxidant rate.

More precisely, the bacterial genus known as Gluconacetobacter, found in 85 per cent of samples tested in one study kombucha published in Food Microbiology last April, has shown a strong ability to produce glucaric acid or saccharic acid. The acid is known to have anti-cancer and detoxifying properties; humans produce small amounts of the acid, but it's also found in fruits, particularly citrus fruits, vegetables like broccoli and kale and legumes.

An improvement in gut health - the most touted benefit of the brew - is unsupported, warns Leung. "In our clinical practice we don't recommend it [for improved gut health] and you won't find a lot of practitioners in Hong Kong that would."

As a general food group however, "fermented foods are very beneficial in terms of probiotics, which are heavily studied…but kombucha should not be seen as a replacement to your regular probiotic because it doesn't contain Lactobacillus or Saccharomyces boulardii (commonly found in regular probiotics)."

As a "general health drink", he says, "it has benefits in terms of overall wellness". He also acknowledges that some of the beneficial bacteria present in the drink would certainly affect that sphere of the gut, "but there's really no studies to prove that yet," he adds.

And if you have a compromised immune system or suffer from lactic acidosis - when your body is in a very acidic state - stay away from it completely.

But naturopath Louise Buckley has a different, more personal view of kombucha: "Just because science hasn't worked out why, doesn't mean it's not beneficial," she says. The practising naturopath has been teaching the benefit of fermented foods for the last three years and has experienced vast gains from her kombucha brew.

"Personally, I can now eat wheat and dairy - my digestive issues, bacterial issues, energy and hormone issues has turned itself around and I credit a large part of that with changing my gut bacteria, which is contributed by drinking kombucha."

Scientifically backed or not, Hongkongers like Buckley are making their own kombucha brew with fervour. Her Facebook group Fermenting Hong Kong has grown to more than 700 members since it started 18 months ago. She conducts brewing courses every two months and has even written a book about all things kombucha.

Time-strapped locals are also flocking to buy the fermented fizz. There are three reputable, well known kombucha producers in Hong Kong who together make about 60 litres a week: Taboocha, Anything But Salads and Green Vitamin.

Hong Kong organic eatery, Mana, has been selling an exclusive blend from Taboocha, made of chamomile, green tea and lemon grass since the beginning of the year. Despite costing a hefty HK$100 a bottle, it sells about 40 bottles a week. "Right now we are running out before the next delivery - we are about to up production," says co-founder Christian CGM.

"The fact that kombucha has been around as long as it has and continues to be used says a lot more to me than any scientific studies," says Buckley. "The benefit of bacteria is well researched, as is the human microbiome - it's just a matter of time before the science catches up."

Reformation's Yael Aflalo

A sunny orange sign opposite the reception desk at eco-friendly fashion brand Reformation's headquarters and factory in downtown Los Angeles proclaims, "You are what you wear #jointhereformation." Upstairs, a wall is painted with the message, "Fashion is the third most polluting industry in the world. Let's clean up." Guests are offered water in recycled Ball jars, while overflow water from the factory irrigates a garden filled with drought-resistant native plants.

Buying a dress or blouse from Reformation may feel a bit like buying into a social consciousness. And that just might be exactly what Yael Aflalo, the 38-year-old co-founder and chief executive, is banking on as she brings her cachet of cool to a less disposable, more environmentally responsible concept of fashion.

It doesn't hurt that the brand's devotees include Taylor Swift, Karlie Kloss, Rihanna, Sophia Bush, Ivanka Trump, Lauren Bush and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

In January, Swift purchased several of the label's "Bill Murray" sweatshirts and then posted a photo on Instagram of herself and the Haim sisters, of the same-named L.A indie band, wearing them while on vacation in Hawaii.

On April 2, Kloss became a partial owner of the business, investing in the company during a $12-million round of Series A funding, as did Andrew Rosen, CEO of fashion brand Theory, and Russian fashion writer Miroslava Duma.

Reformation

KissyDress red prom dresses

The company's revenue in 2014 was $25million, and that number is expected to double or triple by the end of 2015, Aflalo says. Reformation is currently scouting locations in Venice and downtown L.A. for its fourth store.

Co-founded in 2008 by Aflalo and fashion designer Chi Bui (who left the company in 2012), Reformation was originally devoted to reworked vintage fashion pieces, crafted on-site in the brand's first retail space on La Brea Avenue. Now that store has moved to Melrose Avenue, two more boutiques have opened in New York City and the line is created from about 65% eco fabrics, 20% repurposed vintage clothing and 15% dead stock fabrics.

Everything is designed, cut and sewn in Los Angeles, and approximately 70% of the pieces are created in-house at the company factory, which opened in late 2013. Aflalo gives concept direction to the design team and personally tries on every single item for fit. Manuel Ruyman Santos (formerly trend director at Zara) joined the company as design director in December 2014.

Aflalo describes the brand's aesthetic as "sexy and feminine, but cool," or even "minimalist" in terms of the lack of embellishment. Retro-inspired cuts have signature details such as plunging necklines, high slits and peek-a-boo cutouts. The vibe is femme fatale.

Affordability and scarcity are paramount.

While the average price point is $160, the range is from $28 for a Tencel-and-linen T-shirt to $598 for a wedding gown crafted of surplus silk that is part of a bridal collection that debuted in March 2014 — a natural extension for the brand, since dresses make up 50% of sales.

The limited quantities of vintage and dead stock fabrics make rarity an integral part of the business. Fifteen new styles in three colors each (45 total) launch weekly on thereformation, and the company only produces about 200 of each.

"Basically, what we try to do is to get out while it's hot," Aflalo says. "We want to always make less than what people want us to make so, in that way, it's special. It keeps things exclusive."

Sustainable fashion activist Suzy Amis Cameron is a fan and asked the company to design a collection of dresses in February based on Oscar gowns created for her annual Red Carpet Green Dress challenge.

"I really admire the way Reformation thinks outside the box in the fashion world," Cameron says. "It was great to see a company reusing, recycling and up-cycling on so many different levels, from the way they make clothes to the way they operate in their facility. They don't make seasonal clothes that go out of style quickly. They make pieces that can be worn over and over, depending on how they are accessorized … clothes that are versatile and sustainable."

This isn't Aflalo's first foray into fashion.

In 1999, she designed a skirt that caught the eye of local designer John Eshaya, then womenswear buyer for Fred Segal, which led to the launch of the fashion brand Ya-Ya (Aflalo's nickname while growing up).

"I think [Yael's] strength is that she's always had a really great connection to what cool girls are wearing," Eshaya says. "She's always been really smart as far as what girls want now. I think that's what makes her a great designer."

After shuttering Ya-Ya and before launching Reformation, Aflalo traveled to China for a project and was overcome by the level of pollution in a region known for fashion manufacturing.

"You could hardly see or breathe … I really started to have a feeling of accountability for my role in things and this sense of empathy for the world," she says. "Like there's this capitalist guy with a cigar in his mouth, dumping sewage into a creek. I could do better than that. I started researching and [discovered that] making sustainable choices is not that hard. It may be slightly more expensive at the onset, but in the end it pays for itself."

In honor of Earth Day on Wednesday, Reformation plans to launch the Low Carb Collection, a dozen styles produced with minimal carbon dioxide emissions. Model and DJ Atlanta de Cadenet Taylor will pose in the pieces on thereformation. The line also marks the debut of a site-wide initiative to highlight carbon dioxide emissions and water usage for every item sold.

"It's very much training people to think about how much things cost — not just to their wallet, but to the environment," Aflalo says. "The mission is to lead and inspire a sustainable way to be fashionable."

Finding the right beachwear for your body type

“I’m too fat for a swimsuit” was the excuse given by one of my prettiest friends when she ruled out the beach for our group’s summer outing. Apparently when it comes to swimwear, having a pretty face is not enough to make up for an ill-fitting suit.

At the same time, thinking you're “too fat” or whatever other negative perceptions you have about your body can be overcome; just find the right swimsuit for your body type to build up your confidence, and your prettiness will shine through from head to toe!

Finding your fit

A discussion with my other friend set for her trip to Tawi-Tawi revolved around the ultimate goal of “to not look like a whale” when shopping for swimwear. Her miracle piece—the one she was literally dreaming about before she convinced herself to buy it—was a printed ruffled crop top from Anemone.

She went on to explain how the ruffles added volume to her top while balancing out the weight of her bottom. Plus points for its fun and frilly style that made her feel like a kid again.

For me, I discovered my miracle piece is a cut-out maillot in black and gold. Before that I’d never worn a bikini in my life and my knowledge of the different types of cover ups was extensive. Perhaps I was too shy, self-conscious, or conservative… or maybe I just hadn’t found the right suit yet.

Every 'problem area' is an opportunity

In two separate interviews with two leading local swimwear brands, Angela See of Soak Swimwear and Lace Tan of I Love Koi shared with GMA News Online how every problem area can present numerous style possibilities.

KissyDress red prom dresses

“Our basic pieces revolve around bikinis, high-waists and maillots,” said Tan as she explained the items available at I Love Koi.

“We believe that knowing your body shape/type is crucial in finding the perfect swimsuit. We also feel that the ultimate goal is to find the right pieces that will make you feel better and more confident about yourself,” she continued.

Here are different body types with certified beach-ready style solutions:

Big bust – if you’re heavy on top, the first thing to consider is support.

"Halters have enough coverage ‘cause they're bigger and they have thicker straps…you can tie it around the neck so it really supports your bust area," said See.

One of the latest additions to Soak’s line of swimwear is the underwire top for busty women. If you don’t like halters, getting a top with underwire is another good way to make sure you have the support you need.

Long torso – "I think if you have a long torso the high-waist styles will look good on you… you can wear it easily with a triangle or bandeau," said See.

On the other hand if you’d like to appear like you have a long torso, wearing low-rise bottoms can make that illusion for you.

Big tummy – “As for ladies who wish to conceal their tummies, high-waist pieces and one-piece swimsuits are ideal. Look for styles with ruching to help keep things tucked in,” said Tan.

When applied around the waist area, ruching, also known as shirring or gathers, really helps conceal flab. It’s also a pretty detail that can make all the difference between a plain monochromatic swimsuit and your “miracle piece.”

Bottom-heavy – When working with the bottom, there are many things to consider. Women with big thighs would typically prefer to conceal them with a boyleg cut, but See had some unexpected advice for these bodacious bottoms.

“I would suggest high-cut swimwear..I know it looks weird like they feel like they're exposing more of their body, but really it makes… [your legs] look longer," she said.

Alternatively Tan suggested drawing attention elsewhere:

“A pear-shaped silhouette will need something to attract attention towards the upper part of the body. Ruffles, embellishments and lighter/vibrant colors will definitely help because they create the illusion of a fuller upper chest area.”

Flat chest – Herself included in this category, See swears by triangle-cupped tops.

“Because I'm straight... it gives me the curves that I need," she said, adding that “things that tie around the neck” have a natural push-up (or shall we say pull-up) function, giving you the desired cleavage.

Similar to the principle applied with bottom-heavy women, a top with ruffles, embellishments or bright colors is a top that pops and gives the impression of a fuller chest.

Skinny – The skinny girls are lucky. "You can wear anything, promise," said See.

Specifically, cutouts can work very well if you have a straight or masculine figure because they create the illusion of more curves.

Curvy – “If you're curvy, bandeaus fit well," said See. She pointed out that anyone can wear a bandeau, but they tend to look best on women with hourglass figures because the straightness of the piece gives a nice contrast to the body’s curves.

Heavy-set – The rule here is always the same—"the darker the color, the more slimming it is," said See.

“Keep it dark-colored with the bottom and do not go for skin-baring pieces if you want to minimize the appearance of your lower body. Reverse the idea if you are top-heavy,” said Tan, with similar advice.

Soak’s newest piece, a long-sleeved maillot with a V-shaped plunging neckline is “like a rash guard but sexy.” It’s incredibly flattering and also a great way to hide your arms, whether it’s for protection from the sun or to conceal unwanted flab.

Stumpy – "Lower necklines make the torso look longer as well so if it's a deep V, the person looks taller," added See.

Other lengthening devices include vertical stripes and high-cut bottoms.

The golden rule of swimwear

See's number one rule for buying swimwear is you have to fit it. "I personally would not buy if I couldn't fit it," she said, as she pointed out that cutouts can be especially tricky. It’s also important to check that there is ample butt coverage and pads, which they make sure is part of their items at Soak.

When it comes to colors, her advice is simple:

“Get a color, hold it up to your face. See... where your face pops more... that's the color for you."

At I Love Koi, Tan and her team focus on making sure that there’s “something for everyone, every time.” Their swimwear comes in the rare size range of XS to 3XL.

“It's very important to find a swimsuit that balances out your shape, accentuates and highlights your strengths, and minimizes or conceals your imperfection,” said Tan.

“Most importantly, remember to be confident and know that every body is unique and beautiful in its own way,” she added.

fashion show fundraiser

Students from eight local high schools had a chance to summon their inner fashion model on Sunday and do it for a good cause.

More than 25 students took part in the 11th annual Junior Breast Cancer Alliance Fashion Show, strutting their stuff at Richards on Greenwich Avenue to fund programs designed to help underserved women who might otherwise not receive the services they need. The fashion show and silent auction were put together by the students and represented the culmination of months of effort.

Emma Church and Caroline Burch, both of the Convent of the Sacred Heart, have been involved for years with the Junior Breast Cancer Alliance and this is their second year participating as models.

"Spreading the word about this was probably the biggest challenge we faced," Church said. "We have the club in our school and people know how important this is. We just wanted to make sure people know about what the BCA does and who it helps. We do a lot of work in the year doing bake sales and having `civie days' where you can pay money and wear any clothes you want to school."

Burch added, "It's very hard. People have sports and other commitments and it's hard to get them free in their schedules for a Sunday morning but we've been working really hard and making announcements in school. It's really rewarding to see people turn out for this."

Alex Montinaro, of Brunswick School, has been a supporter for years before becoming a model for the day. The Breast Cancer Alliance has a chapter at Brunswick, as it does at other local schools, and he got involved after his fourth-grade teacher Jen Spaulding was diagnosed with breast cancer.

"It showed me how important something like this can be," Montinaro said. "I joined this in my freshman year and I became president of it in my junior year. It's so important that we do what we can to help. It's nice seeing our hard work pay off. We got a lot of people to come out and a lot of nice items for auction."

Church said she was happy to see younger kids, who weren't models, coming out, too.

"It's important for them to get involved and to take on our roles when we graduate," Church said.

Richards wasn't just the host for the event. As longtime supporters of the BCA they donated the outfits. Hair and makeup were done by Becker Salon and food was courtesy of Rosie in New Canaan. The silent auction featured items as diverse as gift certificates for Yogasmoga and the Delamar Hotel Spa, tickets to a Pat Benatar concert, wine and tickets for the New York Mets and the New York Rangers.

The Junior BCA Committee is chaired by Paige Montinaro, Lynn Carnegie, Dee Mayberry and Mary Jeffery, but the work in putting the show together was done by the students.

"This is an opportunity for kids from different schools to actually work together," Montinaro said. "They're so used to competing on the sports fields or in debate or math team. But what's so wonderful about this organization is that it's an opportunity to work together and raise money for a common cause."

Carnegie added, "It's all about the personal connections that all of us, both the teenagers and the mothers on this, have to people who have had breast cancer. Whether it's a good or a bad outcome, so many of us have those connections and it gets you in the heart to see this commitment. So much community service work just involves paperwork but what's so nice about this is that it's about people and mothers and grandmothers and even dads. There is a strong personal connection even if it's a friend who has been impacted by this disease."

Carnegie said working with the BCA allows people to make a difference because the money raised goes to the programs affecting women's health in the community. By getting involved and doing a turn on the catwalk, she said they're able to do good at a young age. She cited the example of her own daughter who was once president of the Junior BCA and then continued the work when she went to college and set up a new organization.

"This is something they're doing year round," Mayberry said. "This is not a one-day event. They're always working to raise awareness for the Breast Cancer Alliance and to raise money at their schools."

Yonni Wattenmaker, the BCA's executive director, said she was pleased to see the continued commitment from Greenwich's youth.

"We are so fortunate to have high schoolers who devote their time throughout the year," Wattenmaker said. "It's incredibly empowering for them to do this. It's inspiring for us but for them they're learning at an early age that somebody can make a difference. Hopefully this sets them on a trajectory throughout their life to be giving back to the community."

Wattenmaker said the money raised would go to help underserved women throughout Connecticut and Westchester County. These are women who need breast health help but might not be able to get it due to a lack of health insurance or an inability to afford the co-pays for these potentially life-saving services.

Students participated not just from Brunswick and CSH but also Greenwich High School, Greenwich Academy, Greenwich Country Day School and Stanwich School. Additionally there was also participation from outside town, from New Canaan High School, King Low Heywood School in Stamford and Fox Lane High School in Bedford, N.Y.

"We're seeing more and more kids get involved every year and it's really great," Wattenmaker said. "We're growing and expanding and I think they really see the value in the time they put in to the organization."

Sofia Vergara had to buy bras made for 'streetwalkers'

Sofia Vergara used to buy bras made for ''strippers''.

The 42-year-old beauty has revealed her size 32F breasts and tiny frame make it nearly impossible for her to buy underwear that fits and admits she used to visit stores in Los Angeles that specialise in outfits for pole dancers.

Sofia said: ''My boobs are, like, huge. My whole life, buying a bra was a nightmare. What I used to do when I moved to LA, I found places like Frederick's of Hollywood that make bras for streetwalkers ... I can't think of the word ... You know...dancers...Strippers. Skinny girls with gigantic boobs.''

While many women around the world would be envious of the 'Modern Family' actress' incredible figure, Sofia insists that being so well-endowed isn't all it's cracked up to be.

She told Vanity Fair magazine: ''Believe me, I wish I had fake boobs. I lay down and they completely go down like all the way, like here. It's not fun.''

The stunning brunette - who is engaged to 'True Blood' actor Joe Manganiello - added that as well as struggling to find bras that fit her, she also has difficulties in choosing outfits that suit her voluptuous figure.

Explaining that she gets upset with fashion critics who comment on her wearing the same style of dress a lot, she said: ''Sometimes you read in the press like, 'Oh, Sofia is wearing again the same shape dress', and I want to answer them and say, 'What the f**k do you want me to wear?' Obviously there's a reason why that's what I go for.''

6 common causes of stretch marks

We all probably have stretch marks somewhere or the other on our body with the most common areas being the arms, thighs, buttocks and stomach. These whitish-purplish lines are not the best looking feature of our body and we often try and conceal them under clothes. The sad part is, once we have stretch marks, we cannot completely get rid of them. In order to prevent these, we need to know the reasons why we have them. Dr Shefali Trasi Nerurkar, a dermatologist, tells us the common causes of stretch marks.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy is one of the most common causes of stretch marks. Often women find their skin stretched out after delivery and these marks seldom fade away. This is because the skin stretches out as your body expands in size and if it isn’t properly hydrated and moisturised, it causes these lines to appear. Therefore, pregnant women are often advised to start applying a moisturising lotion a few months into their pregnancy to avoid stretch marks later.

Rapid weight gain

If you are someone who wants to bulk up in a short period of time, you better be prepared for the appearance of stretch marks on your skin. When our body mass increases rapidly, the body secrets more cortisol which results in stretch marks. It is best to use a moisturiser and gain weight at a moderate pace.

Sudden weight loss

Even losing too much weight in too less time can be the reason for the stretch marks all over your body. This sudden change can shock your skin and it reacts by forming lines. So make sure you pace out your weight loss goal in a manner that is safe for your skin as well as your body or else you won’t be able to flaunt it despite losing all the flab.

Use of excess steroidal creams

Creams containing steroids are often a cause for stretch marks when used in excess. If you cannot do without them, it is best to use a hydrating moisturiser along with it to prevent the occurrence of stretch marks.

Hormonal imbalance

A change in your hormonal imbalance can also cause stretch marks on your body especially if it is a rapid change or imbalance. This change is often due to an underlying medical condition such as Cushing’s syndrome.

Hereditary

If your stretch marks aren’t due to the above factors, they are probably hereditary. Many people suffer from Marfan syndrome or Ehler-Danlos syndrome which are both genetic disorders of the connective tissue.

Even though stretch marks cannot be completely erased, you can prevent them or lighten them with the use of certain home remedies and cosmetic treatments. If you want to get rid of them, you should opt for a treatment option when the marks are pink or red as they can be treated better. White or silvery lines are more difficult to treat.
